佛龛有大有小。大者出现于诸多佛教遗迹中，早期人们凿崖为空，以安佛像。如印度之阿旃塔、爱罗拉，我国云冈、龙门等石窟，四壁皆穿凿众佛菩萨之龛室。《大毗婆沙论》卷一七七记载：“底沙佛至山上，入吠琉璃龛，敷尼师檀，结跏趺坐，入火界定。”
There are big niches and small niches. The great ones appeared in many Buddhist relics. In the early days, people carved cliffs for the space to install the Buddha statues. For example, the caves of Ajanta and aurora in India, Yungang and Longmen in China are all carved with niches of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. According to volume 177 of the theory of the great vipassa, "when the bottom Buddha reaches the mountain, he will enter the baying glass niche, lay the nishitan, and then start to sit and define the fire."
小者多为木制，仿造庑殿、楼阁等建筑样式。龛上设飘檐，下承须弥座式台基，前有回廓，后置佛室，当属等级较高的宫殿形制。
Most of them are made of wood, imitating the architectural styles of veranda and pavilions. There are floating eaves on the niches, which bear the platform base of Mizuo type, with a back outline in front and a Buddha's room in the back. It is a higher-level palace shape.
小型的佛龛多放置于桌案之上，故又称为“案头佛龛”。当权者和文人，无疑是案头佛龛流行的最大由来。现存的案头佛龛中，最常见的分别出自于：南北朝、元朝和清朝三个时期。这些时期，当权阶级无疑都对佛教推崇备至，从皇室到大臣，从官宦到百姓，佛教大行其道，佛龛也作为“日用品”登堂入室，在家居中占据至关重要的地位。
Small niches are often placed on table cases, so they are also called "desk niches". It is no doubt that those in power and literati are the biggest source of the popularity of desk shrines. Among the existing desk shrines, the most common ones are from three periods: the northern and Southern Dynasties, the Yuan Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. In these periods, the ruling class undoubtedly advocated Buddhism to the greatest extent, from the royal family to the ministers, from the officials to the people, Buddhism prevailed, and the niches, as "daily necessities", played an important role in the home.
