龛原指掘凿岩崖为空，以安置佛像之所。据《观佛三昧海经》卷四记载，一一之须弥山有龛室无量，其中有无数化佛。《大毗婆沙论》卷一七七记载：底沙佛至山上，入吠琉璃龛，敷尼师檀，结跏趺坐，入火界定。
Gong originally refers to the place where the statue of Buddha is placed by digging rock cliffs into the air. According to Volume IV of the Book of Viewing Buddha, there are innumerable shrines in Mount Xumi, among which there are innumerable Buddhas. In Volume 177 of The Great Pipa Sha Lun, it is recorded that Deshafo went up to the mountain, entered the glazed niche, applied Nishitan, sat in a shaky position and entered the fire.
现今各大佛教遗迹中，如印度之阿旃塔，爱罗拉，我国云冈、龙门等石窟，四壁皆穿凿众佛菩萨之龛室。后世转为以石或木，作成橱子形，并设门扉，供奉佛像，称为佛龛；此外，亦有奉置开山祖师像。
Among the major Buddhist relics of today, such as the Abanta in India, Irola, Yungang and Longmen Grottoes in China, there are many Buddhist and Bodhisattva shrines on all sides. Later generations turned to stone or wood to form cupboards and open doors to worship Buddhist statues, known as niches; in addition, there are also statues of Kaishan ancestors.
